Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for Embodied AI (DEI4EAI)

2021 - present

DEI4EAI project aims to critique and change the existing common and controversial norms and provide tangible resources for practicing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) when developing embodied AI (e.g., smart products, robots, conversational agents).

We organized a series of workshops to raise awareness on DEI, assess practices, and define methods to design future embodied AI. The workshops were on the role of gender, race, ableism on the development of embodied AI and reflected on designers’ role in imagining more equitable, just, and responsible futures. Each workshop welcomed international speakers and the 4TU NIRICT community to reflect and co-develop inclusive narratives and methodologies.

The outcome of the four workshops and the final event will be a catalog of inclusive narratives for embodied AI that describe the DEI future of embodied AI and a methodological roadmap to provide practical guidance in research and engineering practices of embodied AI.

This project is a collaboration between me, Cristina Zaga, Maria Luce Lupetti, Gijs Huisman, Minha Lee and Eduard Villaronga-Fosch; and funded by the 4TU NIRICT Diversity Funding.
